Gods of Egaar: Oberaque

Welcome to the Egaan Pantheon. Here I will delve into the details of my various gods. I will attempt to provide background, descriptions and interesting tidbits to hopefully give you a better insight into the World of Egaar.

A few months ago I presented a document I referred to as my Godmaker Manuscript. I have been using this over the last year to revamp the pantheon of my world – Egaar. As promised in my previous post I have decided to share some examples of this in practice, starting with the Ruler of the Egaan Pantheon: Oberaque.

Weekly Wittering: Prompt #1

Evening all! Welcome back to Wittering of a Worldbuilder. I know it’s been a while, but due to the current situation with Coronavirus in the UK I thought it’d be a good time to get back into worldbuilding.

Today marks the beginning of a regular posting in which I will be taking on a worldbuilding prompt and attempting to use it to delve into different aspects of my world – Egaar. I will be freewriting a lot of my responses to these prompts and they will hopefully provide me with new, useful information about Egaar and its people.

Prompt #1 – What ‘fantasy resources’ exist in your world?

The Godmaker Manuscript: Creating your Creators

Do you struggle to create the origins of your cosmos? Is your world devoid of divinity? Lacking a creator? If so, this may well be of use to you.

So I’ve been working on rebuilding the pantheon of gods for my world and decided to share my process with you guys. After loads of research into various pantheons from history as well fictional pantheons from popular media, I created the following guide for creating gods.

It is by no means comprehensive, but I feel it gives a good structure to help flesh out various elements of each god, which will aid in your worldbuilding and creative writing process. I have found this to be invaluable when creating various religious denominations around my main pantheon, as well as serving as a useful reference document during my writing process.

Bestiary Builder: Using dogs in Fantasy

Do you ever struggle to create realistic creatures for your fantasy worlds? Ever struggle to understand how to create different breeds or sub species of animal? Then today is your lucky day, as we begin our exploration into building a fantasy bestiary.

Now there is probably some logical starting point for this sort of thing, such as microorganisms or insects, but I personally enjoy writing what currently piques my interest. So today we will begin with the animal commonly referred to as man’s best friend; the dog. Whether this accolade is truly accurate in today’s society is highly debatable due to the vast amounts of other pets now owned by mankind. But looking back through history, the dog certainly has a commendable record of service to humanity.

Let us now dive into the interesting history of the dog and explore how it was used, and indeed can be used in both the real world and our own creations. I will, as always weave in fantastical interpretations and ramblings as we go and may give some examples from my world to hopefully inspire your own creations. Enjoy!

The Importance of Writing: Building the details

So, I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from blogging for the last couple of weeks as I struggled to motivate myself to write something. This was partly due to the pressures of being a teacher this time of year (Revision season!), but also because I couldn’t think of anything that I actually wanted to write about! Yes, I have ideas for continuing series such as Pimp my Race and Fantasy Field Trip, as well as a load of other article ideas for future posts, but sometimes I find it hard to just sit down and write these things. As a result, I have spent a lot of time developing various elements of my long-term work-in-progress: a fantasy world and associated story currently called The Endlands.

Fantasy Field Trip: Ludlow Castle

Ever stuck for fantasy writing ideas? Or struggle to bring a setting to life? Then turn off the computer, forget about writing for an hour and go on a Fantasy Field Trip! Whenever I fancy a break from writing I will often venture out to interesting locations nearby. Whether meaning to or not, I will often return from my escapades brimming with ideas and inspiration drawn from different places I visit. What follows is a documentation of one of my excursions and an explanation of my random thoughts and ideas drawn from what I have seen. Hopefully it may give you an insight into the random way things rattle around my brain and may possibly inspire you to view the world similarly. Enjoy!

Seasonal Significance: Spring

Throughout all of history the seasons of the world have come and gone with regular predictability. Be they explicitly referred to in traditions or simply followed by the lives of indigenous people, the seasons of the year wield great power over life as we know it. Consequently, they should be considered similarly important in your own world, as they can add life, interest and conflict to your world.

With the recent passing of the Spring Equinox here in the northern hemisphere, it seems appropriate for us to discuss the significance of Springtime in our own worldbuilding today.

Pimp my Race: Dwarves

In recent years the common fantasy races have become a little stale. Too long have people used the classic Tolkienesque races in their writing, without making any significant changes. This inevitably leads to characters and plots becoming predictable and mundane. The purpose of this series is to change that. Here we will look at ways to spice up these classic fantasy races and hopefully inspire others to breathe new life into fantasy fiction.
