Megadungeon 23: Week 2

This new project, referred to as Megadungeon 23 is a concept developed by Sean McCoy over on his blog here.

It is a project that I too have decided to embark upon this year as a non-labour intensive side project to help develop a cool megadungeon for my world. The idea is simple in premise: draw a dungeon room a day, everyday; for the whole year. 365 dungeon rooms, drawn in 7 room sections. Each month will represent one layer of the megadungeon, resulting in a 12 layer dungeon by the end of the year.

Druid Backstories – Questions every druid should be able to answer

In order to better integrate Dungeons and Dragons into my world, I have been working on creating a bit of a guide for new players in my games to use when creating their characters. I was inspired by Anto over at Icarus Games on youtube to create a document template that would allow players to fill out a detailed backstory for their characters. Using his ideas as a base, I filled mine out with some additional sections and sets of useful prompt questions to help flesh out a player’s backstory. However, when I came to considering a player’s class, I realised that I wanted personalised, specific questions based on the class they had chosen and thus I created different Backstory templates based on the class selected. In today’s article, I explore the key questions that a Druid in my world should know the answers to.

Recipe: Woodsnout Twiggy Pudding

By Aurdus Ramsbutt

A note from the author: Twiggy pudding has been around for centuries and each family of woodsnouts in the Territories has their own unique recipe passed down from parent to child over the generations. I first remember tasting the delicacy in my teenage years when I worked the lumber run aboard the Imperial timber barges. A lovely old hog gave me a flaming slice one freezing winter solstice and the burning dish both terrified and enthralled me. I must admit although it was deliciously flavourful, it was quite course and tough in places and I failed to finish my portion.

The following recipe has been produced by combining multiple sources gathered from all across the Territories and is the most palatable to the more gentile Imperial tastes.

Heraldry Corner: House Stoker

Welcome to another dive into the Noble houses of my world, Egaar! Today, we are looking at the House of Stoker, a well-known house from the Kingdom of Southrun, a vassal state to the Tarantulan Empire. This write up provides a brief summary of different aspects of the house and roughly follows my guide: The Makings of Nobility. I hope it gives some interesting insight into one of the noble houses of my world and inspires you in your worldbuilding.

World Lore: The Festival of Mathari – Stonehand Dwarves

At this time of year, I thought I’d indulge a little Halloween themed worldbuilding. Therefore, I began to consider how people of my world might experience a Halloween-esque time of year. So, I present to you – Mathari.

Mathari is the common name for the day of the dead on Egaar. Also referred to as Samhain or Samstaad, this time of year is the time where it is believed that the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. The time is celebrated as a festival by many across the world and there are many folk traditions still practiced. In this post, I will explore how the Stonehand Dwarves of my world mark this occasion.

Mini Map #2: The Classic Tomb

Welcome back to Mini Maps! In these posts I share a small dungeon map from my world that is designed for use in tabletop roleplaying games. Today I present the Classic Tomb!

This map was created in Microsoft Paint using a simple gridded base and drawing the room shapes on top. I used interesting plans and images of real life catacombs and tombs to inspire this design and wanted to make the tomb realistic in nature as a common design for a relatively wealthy tomb. I have also tried to adhere to the classic 5-room dungeon design which is laid out below. This should hopefully allow anyone to cut and paste this tomb design into their own games.

Let’s talk about Magic #2: Ley Lines – Part 2

In the World of Egaar, I have created a magic system that combines elements of multiple magic systems, as detailed here. This is mainly to allow for a wide array of magic to exist in my world. My system includes magic as an energy, a substance, a divine gift and as something present in nature to some extent. As a result, the Ley Lines of my world are equally as complex in the way they operate and have various elements of the ideas I have expressed above. I will give the disclaimer that not everything is perfectly ironed out and within the world there are competing theories and beliefs, so it muddies the waters a little with regard to the exact details. Also, as a worldbuilder, I reserve the right to have some rough edges where I can’t be bothered to do the mental acrobatics to figure it all out. Enjoy!

Let’s talk about Magic #2: Ley Lines – Part 1

Magic is a cornerstone of fantasy. If you have a fantasy setting it is likely you have magic within it. Understanding the magic in your world can be important when it comes to story, theme and worldbuilding, so today we will continue to look at how I went about creating the magic system for my world – The World of Egaar.

Ley Lines – What are they in your world?
